Frequently Asked Questions
Your First Visit
What should I expect during my first visit? Your first visit will typically begin with a brief consultation. It is best to arrive a few minutes early to fill out any necessary paperwork and go over your goals. We'll discuss your medical history, any specific concerns or pain points you have, and your preferences for the massage. This helps me tailor the session to your individual needs. I'll then proceed with the hands-on therapy, checking in with you about pressure and comfort.
Do I need a referral from a doctor? In most cases, a referral is not required. However, if you have a specific medical condition or injury, it's always a good idea to consult with your doctor before starting any new therapy, including massage.
What should I wear to my appointment? Dress how you are most comfortable. I will ask you to undress to your comfort level, and cover with a sheet. During the massage, you will be always be draped with the sheet, and only the area being worked on will be uncovered.
Will it hurt? While therapeutic massage can sometimes involve deep pressure or work on tender areas, it should not be excruciatingly painful. I encourage open communication throughout the session. Please let me know immediately if the pressure is too intense or if you experience any sharp pain. I can always adjust my techniques to best suit you and your needs.
During the Session
What techniques do you use? I utilize a variety of techniques tailored to your needs, which may include:
Deep Tissue Massage
Trigger Point Therapy
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)
Sports Massage
Dry Cupping
How long is a session? I offer various session lengths to accommodate different needs, typically 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
Do I have to talk during the session? Not at all! Some clients prefer to talk, while others prefer to relax in silence. I will follow your lead. The most important communication is regarding your comfort and any feedback on the pressure or techniques being used.
After Your Massage
What should I do after my massage? It's common to feel relaxed and sometimes a bit lightheaded after a massage. I recommend drinking plenty of water to help flush out toxins released during the session. You might also feel some muscle soreness for a day or two, similar to after a workout, if deeper work was done.
How often should I get therapeutic massage? The frequency of sessions depends on your individual needs, the condition being addressed, and your response to treatment. We can discuss a personalized plan if you would like. For maintenence massage, many clients find they know how often is best for their body, be it weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.
Will I be sore after the massage? It's possible to experience some mild soreness or tenderness for 24-48 hours after a therapeutic massage, especially if deep tissue work was performed. This is a normal and often positive response, indicating that the muscles have been worked. It should feel like "good sore," similar to post-exercise.
